Pool coping replacement and restoration. We restore cracked, chipped, and deteriorated coping to like-new condition using polymer concrete.

It serves a dual purpose: it provides a finished, safe edge that bathers grip when entering and exiting the pool, and it acts as a critical barrier that directs water away from the pool shell into the deck drainage system rather than behind the pool walls. Coping is typically made from cast concrete, natural stone, pavers, or brick, and it sits directly exposed to the weather on all sides. When coping is in good condition, it protects the pool's bond beam — the structural concrete ring at the top of the shell — from water infiltration. When coping fails, that protection disappears, and much larger structural problems often follow.
In New England, coping is under constant assault from the freeze-thaw cycle. Water works its way into hairline cracks and mortar joints, freezes and expands each winter, then thaws and contracts each spring — repeating this process dozens of times per season. Over years, this produces spalling, cracking, and eventual delamination. Ground settling and frost heave further stress the coping units, lifting or dropping individual sections out of alignment. Chemical exposure from pool water also plays a role, softening and weakening mortar joints along the inside face. By the time visible damage appears, the bond beam beneath is often already compromised. Total Design Concrete has been correcting these problems across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine for over 35 years.
We work with all major coping types and can match your existing style or upgrade to something new. Cantilever coping has a smooth, curved overhang that extends over the pool wall — it's the classic look on most in-ground pools built since the 1970s and provides a clean, modern aesthetic. Bullnose coping features a rounded edge on one or both sides and is often used with flagstone or paver installations for a more natural, traditional appearance. Flagstone and natural stone coping — including bluestone, granite, travertine, and limestone — offers a premium, handcrafted look that elevates the entire pool area. We assess the existing coping, the condition of the bond beam beneath it, and your design goals before recommending the best path forward. In some cases coping can be restored in place; in others, removal and replacement is the right call for lasting results.
Every coping project begins with a careful inspection of the existing units and the bond beam. We identify sections that can be re-bonded and sections that require removal and replacement. When resetting or replacing coping, we use high-bond polymer-modified mortars and sealants specifically formulated for pool environments and freeze-thaw exposure. Joints are packed with flexible, pool-grade sealant that accommodates seasonal movement without cracking. The result is coping that looks brand new, sits level and plumb, and is engineered to outlast standard cement-based repairs in New England's demanding climate. Most coping renovations are completed in one to three days, often coordinated with waterline tile and deck work for a complete pool perimeter transformation.
